Darkness

The night was dark.

On the sidewalk beneath the streetlamp

I considered running left or right.

I didn’t really know

Where either direction would take me.

I just wanted to run

To run and run and run

Until I forgot what I didn’t want to remember.

Until I forgot who I was.

But I knew what I had to do.

Every step

Was like a small battle

But I forced my feet back the way they’d come.

Then I stumped along

Very slowly.

The night was dark.
